Emily Dawson was born and raised in Alaska and was drawn to architecture by her desire to improve the way communities impact the natural environment.

In 2015, Dawson, who earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in architecture at Cornell University, received a travel research fellowship to study mass timber applications in Europe. Her 20 years of experience includes designing the first cross-laminated timber structure built in Oregon as part of an expansion at the Oregon Zoo, and she鈥檚 now a sought-after speaker at industry conferences on mass timber products.

In addition, Dawson was part of the team that built the tallest cross-laminated timber building in the country, Carbon12. She was the project architect on her newest project, the Canyons, a breakthrough in using these environmentally advanced materials in the world of multifamily development.

Dawson is one of the main authors of the State of the Industry Report for North American Mass-Timber. She is heavily involved in connecting the world of environmentalists and foresters, together with the world of manufacturing, to broker a new understanding in the best ways to add value to the nation鈥檚 forests and both protect and maintain them in a healthier state.

Recognized as a 2016 91视频 Woman of Vision, Dawson said she is passionate about bringing teams together to develop collaborative, creative solutions.
Ben Kaiser, founding partner of Kaiser + Path, noted that Dawson is leading the country and telling her story in order to teach others about how to improve the environment while also creating beautiful spaces.

鈥淓mily is, without a doubt, one of the country鈥檚 preeminent leaders in the use of mass timber and, more specifically, cross-laminated timber. She was the first to design a project here in the Northwest, with the zoo facility, and has gone on to design and administer the use of mass timber in more and more innovative ways,鈥� he said.
