The personal health, safety and well-being of DAY CPM鈥檚 team is paramount to Cathy Kraus, who has done extensive research on how psychological safety can help build trust and support high-functioning teams that better serve clients and their projects.

Kraus witnessed this dynamic while working alongside an Andersen Construction/ZGF design-build team that delivered award-winning clinics in Ridgefield and Camas, Washington, for Vancouver Clinic. Both were completed ahead of schedule and under budget, notable given that the project involved converting two exam rooms to be negatively pressurized to treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

The DAY CPM Healthcare team supported the project teams with sessions based on Clifton StrengthsFinder. The sessions allowed members to learn about their top five personal strengths and to notice and reflect on how and when other members鈥 strengths showed up in communication and service to the project and team. The sessions also helped the team confirm their common goals for project outcomes, and how their collective strengths worked to support these goals.

鈥淚 have personally witnessed when a team member feels seen, heard and appreciated,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey bring more of themselves to their teams and projects, and they are more engaged. When this happens, everyone wins, including their families and communities.鈥

Kraus鈥 success on the projects led to invitations to present before the Idaho Society of Healthcare Engineering and the Seattle 2021 AIA Architecture for Health Spring Conference. She also has submitted an article to the AIA Academy for Architecture for Health Journal 2021.
