The Architecture Foundation of Oregon will recognize its three scholarship winners for 2022 during a May 16 reception from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Hacker鈥檚 headquarters in District Office, at 555 S.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite 501.

This year鈥檚 Hatfield Scholars are University of Oregon student Sharon Alitema and Portland State University student Darrick Williams. The Hatfield Architectural Award is presented annually to an undergraduate or graduate architecture student in Oregon; it was established in 1998 to recognize an Oregon architecture student for design promise and community service.

Portland State University student Regina Batiste is this year鈥檚 William Hart Scholar. This is the first time this award 鈥� for undergraduate or graduate architecture students in Oregon 鈥� is being presented, in partnership with Carleton Hart Architecture. The vision is to help expand equity in the profession and communities, remove barriers to entry in the profession, and support future architects.

Each scholarship winner was awarded $5,000.

Alitema, from a rural town in Uganda, brought her culture and experience to UO, where she received an undergraduate degree and began pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in architecture. 鈥淚 realize that no single approach can serve people living in different cultures and ecosystems with the same effectiveness,鈥� she said in her application essay.

Williams is a Portland native who has experienced displacement and gentrification firsthand. His family was pushed from the Albina area to other neighborhoods and eventually into Gresham. He is now a candidate for a master鈥檚 degree in architecture at PSU. Williams aspires to use the knowledge he has gained through education and community engagement 鈥渢o advocate for sustainable design for all people, and really prioritize those that have been suppressed for so long by terrible housing designs,鈥� AFO stated on its website.

From a young age, Batiste learned that 鈥渁 home is temporary鈥� after experiencing hurricanes and storms that destroyed buildings in their neighborhood on the Texas Gulf Coast. Later, while traveling during service in the armed forces, Batiste became inspired by global communities鈥� environmentally sustainable and thoughtful designs despite few resources. They chose to pursue a master鈥檚 degree in architecture at PSU to become an 鈥渆nvironmental humanitarian with the enthusiasm to change the world one building at a time,鈥� AFO stated on its website.
