Oregon OSHA has fined a Portland-based contractor $65,000 for repeatedly failing to protect workers from potentially fatal falls.

West Coast Roofing & Painting was issued the penalty this month after an inspection of a roofing jobsite found the contractor had not implemented adequate fall protection measures. The inspection found five employees working on a single-story residential building in Southeast Portland exposed to possible falls to the ground exceeding 10 feet without protection.

It was the seventh time in the Portland-metro area that the company was found in violation of the same fall protection requirement, according to Oregon OSHA. Since 2019, the agency has fined West Coast Roofing & Painting more than $175,000 for those infractions and $34,480 more for 14 other workplace violations.

鈥淔all protection saves lives It keeps workers from falling and getting seriously injured,鈥� stated Renee Stapleton, acting administrator for Oregon OSHA. 鈥淓mployers must put it into practice when work is being done at heights. Failing to do so only increases the risk that a worker will go to the hospital or never go home from work again.鈥�

Employers have 30 calendar days after receiving a citation to file an appeal.

West Coast Roofing & Painting did not respond immediately to a phone call seeking comment.
