Anniversaries are a cause for celebration. So, I apologize for starting this introduction with a somber tone. But as the French playwright Anniversaries Moli猫re once quipped, 鈥渢he greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.鈥�

We鈥檝e overcome so much adversity in one year. In this very column a year ago, I reported the harrowing impact of the pandemic on small businesses across the globe. How we weren鈥檛 immune to it locally and how it is having an outsized impact on our most vulnerable populations.

The pandemic isn鈥檛 over, and as we鈥檝e learned, there are a series of new and worsening challenges in line behind it like war, inflation, a vulnerable supply chain and division within in our society. Yet, our path to recovery is bathed in optimism, armed with expertise born out of the obstacles we鈥檝e overcome and a fresh perspective on what is possible.

That鈥檚 exactly how we feel at the Daily Journal of Commerce where we鈥檙e celebrating our 150th anniversary in 2022.

The obstacles in our industry started long before the pandemic and have only sped up since. The only thing we know for certain is that we won鈥檛 look anything like we do now when we celebrate our 160th and we couldn鈥檛 be more excited about what鈥檚 in front of us.

As we pull out the champagne to toast the companies within these pages, the Daily Journal of Commerce and the hundreds of businesses across the region celebrating anniversaries this year, let鈥檚 remember what we鈥檝e overcome 鈥� and what we aim to accomplish 鈥� is unprecedented. And for those still feeling the impact or are dealing with the next great challenge, remember that the true disaster isn鈥檛 what we experience, but when we lose our hope. There is an entire community in the Pacific Northwest rooting for you and here to help you up when you fall.

Let鈥檚 raise our glasses to all of those with something to celebrate, our strengthening resiliency and our widening belief in what is possible.
