The Clackamas Regional Center Project is a compilation of 30 separate projects outlined in the county鈥檚 TSP and Capital Improvement Project List. The CRC Mobility Project served as the critical hub that combines all modes of transportation in a unique and complex area, balancing the needs of motor vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, transit and freight traffic.

HHRP led the design team for the project, which provided roadway improvements along Sunnyside Road that included separated bike and pedestrian facilities; colored-concrete cycle track; a roadway diet to reduce pedestrian crossing times; low-water-use medians and landscape enhancements; high-visibility pavement and bike markings; and water quality facilities integrated into the streetscape.

The project widens and improves the Sunnyside Road/I-205 interchange and includes seismic upgrades, bridge and roadway widening, new signalized intersections and ADA improvements. The installation of decorative railings on the Sunnyside Road bridge over I-205 incorporates LED lighting, providing a sense of place for the community and welcoming visitors to the Clackamas Regional Center area.

Construction of this complex, two-year project was carried out during the pandemic and the fires of September 2020, when many Clackamas County residents had to shelter in the parking lot of the adjacent Clackamas Town Center.

鈥淚t is a testament to the spirit of our business and industry that all of the contractors, subcontractors, surveyors, inspectors, engineers and construction management staff worked tirelessly through some of the generation鈥檚 darkest times to get this project completed on schedule in November of 2021,鈥� HHPR noted.

Among other challenges, the existing Sunnyside Bridge did not meet current seismic design standards. The new bridge widening and improvements, coupled with cost-effective upgrades on the existing structure, brought the combined crossing structure up to current code. In addition, right-of-way acquisition involved negotiation with 54 properties in the busy commercial corridor.
