Washington County has approved the award of a contract for approximately $11.97 million to Scio-based Oregon State Bridge Construction for construction of a single-span concrete bridge to carry Cornelius Pass Road over Butternut Creek.

The bridge will support the ultimate five-lane road section, sidewalks, bicycle infrastructure and street lighting as well as serve a trail. Utilities will be suspended from the bridge.

The estimated project cost is $14.1 million. Some funding came via Washington County鈥檚 Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program (its Bonding Cost-sharing Program) in February 2021.

Developer Pahlisch Homes paid for design of the Cornelius Pass Road Bridge over Butternut Creek. The company also is partially paying for construction. Design was performed by KPFF and AKS Engineering & Forestry.

Construction is expected to start in April 2023 and finish in June 2024. The project will be managed by Washington County.

On Sept. 20, when the county鈥檚 board of commissioners approved the contract award, the group also approved an agreement for PGE to reimburse the county for actual costs of certain work to be performed by the project contractor. That work, requested by PGE, involves installation of utility attachments, hangers, vaults and conduits. Those improvements are estimated to cost $462,520.

The bridge will allow development to continue south as well as extension of Cornelius Pass Road to proceed further toward Farmington Road, said Heather Sturgill, a communications specialist who supports the county鈥檚 capital road projects.
