For Hispanic Heritage Month, Energy Trust of Oregon is partnering with LatinoBuilt to honor the practical routines and teachings Latino families have passed down from one generation to another. The organizations are releasing a weekly series of short videos, along with a blog post, that focus on local Latino or Latina business owners and how their views and behaviors on energy efficiency were shaped by unique family experiences.

The four featured Latino business owners include Rene Flores of Rubi Heating & Cooling, Dr. Elizabeth Flores of Housecall MD LLC, Ernesto Morales Melo of Comfort Insulation Specialists LLC, and Joe Calderon of Sterling-Pacific Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing.

One of the stories is of Melo鈥檚 mother teaching him to value what little they had, sparking a curiosity in him to seek more energy-efficient ways of doing things, according to the blog post. His company, started in 2018, is an Energy Trust trade ally.

Flores, a physician with specialized training in geriatrics, grew up in rural Mexico and recalls her large family had to find ways to save energy and resources out of necessity, according to the post. Efforts such as sealing windows to keep warm air inside the home are part of her everyday life, she said in the blog and video.
