LEVER Architecture has been selected to design a $100 million expansion for the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) in Maine. The project will more than double the size of the 140-year-old museum located in the heart of downtown Portland, Maine, and unify the PMA campus.

In June 2022, Dovetail Design Strategists in partnership with PMA launched the Campus Unification + Expansion International Design Competition for the project. It garnered submissions from more than 250 firms. LEVER was selected from a short list of four finalists; the other three were Adjaye Associates, MVRDV, and a team co-led by Toshiko Mori Architect, Johnston Marklee, and Preston Scott Cohen.

The 60,000-square-foot addition 鈥� a wood-and-glass structure 鈥� will be among the first commercial timber buildings in Maine.

The PMA addition is expected to open in 2026.
