KPFF Consulting Engineers has received a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies for exemplary engineering achievement. The firm鈥檚 design of the Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge was honored as part of ACEC鈥檚 56th annual Engineering Excellence Awards. The bridge also was named ACEC Oregon Project of the Year.
Named for the founder of the 鈥淐ongressional Bike Caucus,鈥 the 435-foot-long bridge spanning Interstate 84 and an active rail line will be a key link in the Green Loop 鈥 a planned six-mile linear park around the heart of Portland. Both the bridge and its abutments are designed to withstand a major earthquake, as well as support emergency vehicles.
KPFF led an extensive community engagement process to select a bridge design that was aesthetically inviting, fulfilled budget and performance requirements, and enhanced the unique communities at both ends of the span. To minimize construction-related disruptions to I-84, the project team engineered a cost-effective structure that was lifted into place in a single weekend.
The project is among 179 EEA entries this year representing engineering excellence worldwide. Judging for the awards program 鈥 known as the 鈥淎cademy Awards of the engineering industry鈥 鈥 was conducted by a national 27-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media and academia. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and generation of excitement for the engineering profession.
All 2023 award winners will be recognized at the annual EEA Gala Dinner and Awards Program on June 13 in Washington, D.C.
