Four Oregon projects recently received 2023 U.S. Wood Design Awards.

WoodWorks鈥� awards celebrate 鈥渆xcellence and innovation in mass timber, heavy timber, light-frame, and hybrid building design,鈥� according to the nonprofit鈥檚 website. National awards were given to 10 category winners. Categories included: innovation, commercial wood design 鈥� mid-rise, commercial wood design 鈥� low-rise, wood in schools, multifamily wood design, wood in government buildings, institutional wood design, sustainable wood design, beauty of wood, and durable & adaptable wood structures.

An additional 12 projects were recognized for regional excellence.

Three local projects 鈥� Mississippi Workshop (commercial wood design 鈥� mid-rise) and Central Lofts (multifamily wood design) in Portland and the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts (beauty of wood) in Beaverton 鈥� were national winners. Chemeketa Community College鈥檚 Agricultural Complex, in Salem, was a regional honoree.

The three-person jury included Hacker principal Corey Martin. Others were Cheung Chan, an associate at Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City, Iowa, and Lauren Wingo, a senior structural engineer at Arup in Washington, D.C.

The Mississippi Workshop project team included developer/architect Waechter Architecture, structural engineer KPFF Consulting Engineers, and contractors Waechter Architecture, Owen Gabbert, and Cutwater PDX.

The Central Lofts project team included architect Jones Architecture, structural engineer Froelich Engineers, developer BlackRock Development and Real Estate, and contractor R&H Construction.

The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts project team included architect Opsis Architecture, structural engineer KPFF Consulting Engineers, owner city of Beaverton, and contractor Skanska.

The Chemeketa Agricultural Complex project team included architect FFA Architecture and Interiors, structural engineer KPFF Consulting Engineers, owner Chemeketa Community College, and contractor Swinerton Builders.
