Tall timber building undergoes seismic tests

A 10-story mass-timber structure at the University of California, San Diego, became the tallest building ever to be seismically tested.

Two shake tests were performed on the cross-laminated-timber structure on Tuesday to simulate motions recorded during the 1994 Northridge earthquake (magnitude 6.7) and the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake (magnitude 7.7).

The project is part of the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) TallWood Project 鈥 an industry-wide initiative to prove the seismic resilience of mass timber and its strength as a low-carbon structural building material. The effort is supported by Think Wood, its parent organization 鈥 the Softwood Lumber Board (SLB), and its partner organizations 鈥 WoodWorks and the Binational Softwood Lumber Council (BSLC).

鈥淢ass timber is already known globally as a sustainable, low-carbon building material,鈥 stated Cees de Jager, president and CEO of the SLB and BSLC. 鈥淭hese tests will prove mass timber鈥檚 viability as a safe and effective, as well as sustainable, alternative to steel-and-concrete buildings in seismically active areas, paving the way for broader adoption in taller mass-timber structures nationwide.鈥

The principal investigators include researchers from Washington State University, the University of Washington, the Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, Lehigh University, and the University of Nevada, Reno.

The 10-story structure, designed by LEVER Architecture and fabricated by Timberlab, mainly comprises donated mass timber. A modular stair system designed by Construction Specialties (CS) allowed testing of performance under seismic duress in a multistory application.

Researchers will now disassemble the top four floors and send the deconstructed wood to Oregon State University for additional testing and research to gather data for end-of-life reuse in the built environment.

Industry project partners include Simpson Strong-Tie, Sumitomo Forestry, Boise Cascade, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, Freres Engineered Wood, SmartLam, Mass Timber Services, Rex Lumber Company, Idaho Forest Group, and the TallWood Design Institute.
