Rockwood Village addresses the need for affordable housing in the heart of the Rockwood neighborhood in Gresham. The project was designed to embrace and engage Oregon鈥檚 youngest, most diverse and fastest-growing district. The median age is 27, and more than 60 languages are spoken.

There are four four-story buildings, one three-story building and a central, freestanding community building that collectively provides 224 apartment homes that range from one- to four-bedroom units. Each unit boasts Energy Star appliances, LED lighting, integrated AC window ports, and low-flow plumbing fixtures. To date, about 53.1 percent of the property鈥檚 units have been leased to BIPOC households.

The community building includes a large gathering space with a full kitchen for events and social interaction, along with audio visual equipment that provides community space for seminars or workshops. The outdoor area boasts a spacious children鈥檚 play area, various walking paths and picnic areas, as well as community gardens and an urban farm. Rockwood Village also frames and connects the area鈥檚 newest public square, called Neighbors鈥� Park, which encourages residents to get outside and experience the Pacific Northwest鈥檚 unmatched beauty.

Other key aspects of Rockwood Village were developed through an approach known as Asset Based Community Development, facilitated by Portland State University鈥檚 Center for Public Interest Design. This 鈥淎BCD鈥� approach helps identify and understand community and program needs, then focuses on filling in missing components and leveraging community resources.

Rockwood Village was built to accommodate households as their needs change. The combination of a single community building, a housing complex and the proximity to Neighbors鈥� Park and public transportation demonstrates a commitment to not just creating an affordable living space, but building a supportive and robust community.
