TriMet and a construction team led by JE Dunn received the top award – Project of the Year – during the 91ÊÓƵ’s annual TopProjects event at the Oregon Convention Center on Thursday.

Entrants were among the top projects in Oregon and Southwest Washington substantially completed by Dec. 31, 2022. This year’s competition featured 72 projects in 12 categories.

The new TriMet bus maintenance facility, which replaced the TriMet Powell garage, has more than double the space of the previous bus maintenance building that was constructed as a temporary facility more than 45 years ago. The project involved a phased rebuild of the 17-acre site.

The new facility features 22 bays and a 400,000-square-foot yard able to accommodate 300 buses. A new 24,000-square-foot, three-bay fuel and wash building houses a bus wash system that reclaims and treats water, allowing TriMet to recycle 300 gallons of water per minute. The new facility’s electrification supports TriMet’s commitment to use of a 100 percent zero-emission fleet by 2040. Buses can be powered up at the facility.

Great care was taken during construction to avoid disturbing the main fiber optic utility (for Portland’s 911 Call Center), which ran directly through TriMet’s site. The project team successfully relocated the fiber into an underground vault system, and then continued to work around the fiber during mass excavation, foundation work, and underground utility work without interrupting 911 service at any point during the four-year project.

Aggressive and creative efforts by JE Dunn Construction during the bidding process and preconstruction led to successful participation by COBID (Certification Office for Business Inclusion and Diversity) firms. Sit-down meetings with larger partners helped ensure they understood participation requirements, and JE Dunn helped foster relationships between those partners and COBID firms – and many of those relationships turned into partnerships. In the end, project participation by COBID firms exceeded 26 percent.

Other firms involved with the TriMet project included Stantec, David Evans and Associates and Glumac.

The People’s Choice Award, voted on by event attendees, went to the Vancouver Clinic – Salmon Creek 2 in Vancouver, Washington. The owner/developer is Pacific Medical Buildings. The project team included Andersen Construction, ZGF Architects, KPFF, MacKay Sposito, PAE and Stantec.

Judges for this year’s competition were Alex Jensen, 91ÊÓƵ multimedia editor; June Kalkhoven, managing member and CEO of Oxbow Construction; Brian Peters, managing principal of Woodblock Architecture; McKenzie Richardson, director of marketing for PAE; Ken Stoneman, senior manager for David Evans and Associates; Michael Strachan, marketing director for Harder Mechanical Contractors; and Karen Tatman, principal engineer and project manager for Consor.

TriMet was the event’s presenting sponsor. Silver sponsors were LMC Construction, Walsh Construction, and JE Dunn Construction.
