The University of Oregon Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved construction of a new 170,000-square-foot indoor football practice facility.

The privately funded project will expand the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex slightly west of Autzen Stadium, between Leo Harris Parkway and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The board approved a proposal to lease portions of the complex as well as property to be acquired from the city of Eugene to Phit Too LLC, a University of Oregon Foundation entity that will manage construction of the facility and then gift it to the university upon completion.

The project is expected to be completed in 2025, a year later than originally anticipated, due to delays tied to negotiations of a land swap for the property with the city of Eugene and the university. To replace the existing outdoor practice fields where the facility will be built, the university approached the city about acquiring additional property for privately funded construction of two replacement outdoor practice fields.

UO plans to swap slightly more than eight acres of its property adjacent to the city’s new Downtown Riverfront Park and steam plant, for four city-owned acres of Alton Baker Park, including a parking lot across Leo Harris Parkway from Autzen Stadium.

The proposal would allow Leo Harris Parkway to be rerouted to create a shared parcel large enough to accommodate the new indoor facility and two outdoor practice fields. Construction of the project will in large part take place on existing paved areas.
