A provider of information technology solutions is adding two data centers to its campus in Hillsboro. Flexential is hoping to complete the first phase of its Hillsboro 4 facility by this fall while also working on Hillsboro 5.

Flexential specializes in colocation, cloud computing, connectivity, and more. The company has 41 data centers (including three now operating in Hillsboro) in 19 markets.

The two new data centers will be adjacent to Hillsboro 3, which is at 5419 N.E. Starr Blvd. The 18-megawatt (upon completion), 138,000-square-foot Hillsboro 4 will be at 4915 N.E. Starr Blvd. and the 36-megawatt, 240,000-square-foot Hillsboro 5 will be at 4975 N.E. Starr Blvd.

Flexential is partnering with utility provider Portland General Electric on the projects and working with kW Mission Critical Engineering, a member of WSP, on design. Flexential is managing the project itself with its internal design and construction teams.

The team has focused on sustainability while designing the data centers, said Sherri Harrell, Flexential鈥檚 senior vice president of platform product management.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e being built with the target power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.4, which is very good in the industry,鈥 she said.

The data centers also will have zero water usage efficiency (WUE).

The city of Hillsboro has had a long-standing relationship with Flexential throughout the development of the first three data centers and now the next two.

鈥淭he city recognizes that data centers continue to emerge as a vital industry to modern society and economy,鈥 Dan Dias, the city鈥檚 economic and community development director, stated in an email. 鈥淒ata centers are a critical infrastructure that support social media, enable virtual meetings and support health care聽鈥 nationally as well as in our own community.鈥

The data centers鈥 collective presence enhances the digital infrastructure that contributes to Hillsboro鈥檚 position as a center for global technology, Dias stated.

The first phase (11 megawatts) of Hillsboro 4 is on track to become available for customers by this fall. It will offer direct connectivity to the Hillsboro 2 facility 鈥 a global interconnection hub. Completion of Hillsboro 4鈥檚 second phase (seven megawatts) will follow as warranted by demand, Harrell said.

Meanwhile, construction of the Hillsboro 5 building shell is scheduled to finish in November. Hillsboro 5 will also be built in multiple phases. There is no date yet for when that facility will come online.

鈥淲e鈥檒l build out in tranches based on the demand that we see,鈥 Harrell said.

Flexential is seeing a lot of demand in the market and monitoring the situation closely, Harrell said.
