A construction worker sustained serious injuries after falling two stories through a hole in a building’s roof in Southeast Portland on Thursday afternoon.

Portland Fire & Rescue personnel responded to the incident just before 2 p.m. at the historic Troy Laundry Building, at 221 S.E. 11th Ave. There, construction crews are tackling an adaptive reuse project that includes adding rooftop space to the two-story structure.

Rescuers found the construction worker with serious injuries, but in stable condition, the Portland Fire & Rescue report stated. Due to limited stairway access during construction, the technical rescue team was activated to assist extrication of the worker from the building. An aerial ladder and rope system was used to lower the person to the ground.

The worker remained in stable condition throughout the operation and was transported to a local hospital.

Swinerton is serving as the general contractor for the Troy Laundry Building project. Division Manager Bobby Jennings said the worker has since been released from the hospital and an investigation of the incident has begun.

Construction of the adaptive reuse project started in winter 2021. Work is expected to finish later this year.
