A new three-story, approximately 301,000-square-foot replacement is in the works for Beaverton High School. It鈥檚 one of several projects that advanced when voters approved a $723 million bond measure in May 2022. The total project budget is $253 million.

Beaverton High School, originally built in 1916, is the oldest school in the district, according to its website. The approximately 230,134-square-foot school will remain open during construction of the new one. Then the old one will be demolished, and the space will become a parking lot or other programming, according to the district.

The new school will be constructed on a grass field along Southwest Farmington Road, north of the existing one at 13000 S.W. Second St. It will accommodate about 1,500 students.

BRIC Architecture designed the project for Beaverton School District. The project team also includes construction manager/general contractor Skanska, landscape architect Walker Macy and civil engineer KPFF.

BRIC architects Jessica Molinar, an associate, and Marc Nordean, a principal, designed the project together. Exterior materials will include chevron-shaped metal panels, high-density fiber cement panels as accents, and a brick base, they said.

鈥淔or this project, we went through a long process of engagement sessions to get inspiration and to have those listening sessions really direct us on design concept,鈥 Molinar said. 鈥淭he concept that we arrived at was really trying to represent different cultures in the design of the building.鈥

One of the common threads was that all the cultures use jewelry for expression. The team responded by creating an exterior design that uses conceptual beads, threads and jewels to provide cohesiveness.

The 鈥渏ewels鈥 will be flexible spaces that allow for self-expression. They will be able to support a variety of uses, including academics and collaboration. The 鈥渏ewels鈥 will also break down the building鈥檚 scale in places such as entries, the library, and the main gym.

鈥淭hese spaces appear as apertures on the fa莽ade,鈥 Molinar said. 鈥淭hose are the jewels.鈥

On the fa莽ade, the windows and accent panels are the 鈥渂eads鈥 that are strung between the 鈥渢hreads,鈥 or horizontal bars running the length of the building intended to represent floor levels.

The new school will also have an enclosed outdoor courtyard. It will serve as a social space but could also be used for learning.

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring with demolition of the 39,326 square foot Merle Davies building, which holds a lecture hall, some general classrooms, and a conference room. Portable classrooms will be available on-site during construction as needed.

The new school is set to open in fall 2026, though the entire project likely won鈥檛 be completed until fall 2027.
