A new, 23,450-square-foot mountain resort, A-Frame Club, was designed by Portland-based Skylab Architecture.

Located at 1008 Winter Park Drive along the Fraser River in Winter Park, Colorado, the A-Frame Club takes design cues from 1970s ski culture and the A-frame cabins of that era. The hotel consists of 31 prefabricated cabins聽along with聽a聽bar聽and restaurant in聽a聽historic saloon building. The site is within walking distance of Winter Park Resort.

Skylab Architecture designed the project for owner/developer Zeppelin Development, of Denver.

鈥淎 good portion of the project is modular and panelized construction,鈥� Skylab principal and project director Robin Wilcox said.

The cabins were prefabricated by Plant Prefab, near Los Angeles, as modules and panels. The cabins were shipped to the site in pieces and then assembled by Plant Prefab.

Zeppelin Development performed other on-site construction, such as siding and concrete.

The project team also includes civil engineer Bowman 鈥� headquartered in Reston, Virginia 鈥� and structural, mechanical and electrical engineer Resource Engineering Group of Crested Butte, Colorado.

The team sought to touch the site only lightly and disturb as few trees as possible, Wilcox said. Set on low piers, each cabin is elevated above the ground, with a concrete crawl space. A series of boardwalks connect the parking lot to the cabins, which are arranged in a geometrical form, like a snowflake, he said.

The design and materials are based on 1970s ski culture with a riff on A-frame typology, Wilcox said. Building materials for the cabins鈥� exteriors include metal roofs, cedar siding, and Sierra Pacific aluminum-clad windows.

鈥淓ach one of them has a small deck that comes off the living space with a (9-foot) slider,鈥� Wilcox said. 鈥淵ou can open up half of that, so you get a nice, big, 4.5-foot opening to the outside when weather permits.鈥�

The interior finishes play off the colors from the 鈥�70s, with orange and green shades.

Each prefabricated聽cabin is 475 square feet. The ground floor includes聽a kitchenette, a bathroom and聽a living room. There is a聽lofted bedroom, along with a soaking tub.

The roofs are steep and 30 feet high. Tall, glass windows let in natural light. Each cabin has a custom fireplace and vintage furnishings. Walls are lined with warm-toned cedar panels and custom millwork.

An existing building on the site was transformed into a saloon. An outdoor patio/bar is between the saloon and the cabins. There is also an event lawn between the cabins and the river.

The kitchen and bathroom were fully constructed in the factory by Plant Prefab. The floors and walls were in panels. Constructed pieces were placed on the foundation, followed by the panels.

The A-Frame Club opened in January following approximately 18 months of construction.
