Real estate investment and operating company Unico Properties has added a member to its security team in downtown Portland: a 5-foot, 5-inch, 420-pound (ASR). The ASR began patrolling the perimeter of the U.S. Bancorp Tower’s parking structure earlier this month.
Unico’s ASR is the first to operate downtown. Nicknamed “Rob,” it provides continuous monitoring and surveillance for the security officers inside the U.S. Bancorp Tower.
Manufactured by California-based Knightscope, Rob is one of the newest innovations in property security. Rob is equipped with: video surveillance of 4K quality and 360-degree visibility, thermal imaging to detect potential threats, two-way intercom capabilities to support dialogue between individuals and Unico’s on-site security officers, an amplified speaker for alert broadcasting as necessary, license plate recognition technology to monitor unwanted vehicles around the garage, and Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alerts that prompt notifications when banned individuals are on-site.
Rob is the latest investment Unico has made to ensure the safety of tenants, visitors and employees in Portland’s largest office building. The existing security platform at the U.S. Bancorp Tower includes more than 200 cameras, which offer 200 unique angles and provide the building’s security officers extensive surveillance capabilities.
Use of Knightscope’s robotics technologies, like those in Rob, have resulted in significant decreases in crime reports and citations, and an increase in arrests, according to the firm. Among Knightscope’s initial tasks for Rob was completing a site assessment of the robot’s routes. Rob has since performed regular patrols around the parking structure.
