Joseph Hughes Construction (JHC) has announced a leadership transition that took effect Jan. 1. Founder Joe Hughes is stepping down from day-to-day management and Vice President Tom Rue, a longtime employee and owner, is being promoted to president.

Hughes, who was the firm鈥檚 president for nearly 43 years, will remain with the company and continue to interact with clients and employees on a regular basis for the foreseeable future.

鈥淎s I begin to step away from JHC, I am confident and comfortable knowing that I have the right people on the team and I am excited to watch the next generation of JHC flourish while I continue to provide support, guidance, advice and most importantly, friendship to our clients,鈥 Hughes stated in a press release.

Rue was hired by JHC as a superintendent in 1985, was promoted to general superintendent in 1994, joined Hughes as an owner in 2004, and then became vice president in 2018. He will now lead the company.

鈥淯nder Joe鈥檚 leadership, Joseph Hughes Construction has built every type of commercial project possible from award-winning offices to industrial warehouses to hip restaurants and retail stores, and he has a great story for almost every single job,鈥 Rue stated in the press release. 鈥淭hose stories almost always stem from the valuable relationships and friendships that we have been blessed with and are so fortunate to be a part of. We will continue his tradition of building superior projects with exceptional employees while offering an engaging and pleasurable experience to all of our clients.鈥

Additionally, JHC鈥檚 current chief financial officer, Taylor Schmitz, is joining Rue as an owner without any change in his CFO duties. Schmitz joined the company in 2019, bringing over a decade of financial management experience from companies such as Tektronix and Xerox.

Hughes founded JHC in Portland in 1981. The firm provides full construction services throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. JHC has completed more than 3,000 tenant improvements and 250 new buildings for commercial, industrial, civic and hospitality clients in the Portland-metro area and surrounding communities.

Hughes was honored as a 91视频 Icon in 2018. The award recognizes local building industry professionals older than age 60 who have left a legacy.

Recent JHC projects include the Rotary Youth Center at Morrison (a 91视频 TopProjects finalist in 2021), Scott Edwards Architecture headquarters (a 91视频 TopProjects finalist in 2022), more than 100 Starbucks remodels, Emler Swim School facilities in Tualatin and Beaverton, and others.
