Upgrades to sewer and water pipes are in the works for Portland鈥檚 Broadway Corridor.

The city鈥檚 Bureau of Environmental Services is working with the Water Bureau on the project in the Pearl District near the former U.S. Postal Service site in Northwest Portland. Crews will replace aging pipes, rehabilitate others, and increase system capacity primarily on Northwest Ninth Avenue and Hoyt Street. Also, maintenance holes in the area will be either rehabilitated or installed.

Engineering and design were performed in-house by a BES team in partnership with the Portland Water Bureau and the Portland Bureau of Transportation. Granite Construction is the contractor. Major subcontractors have not been identified yet, but their scopes are expected to include pipe bursting, earthquake-resistant water line installation, concrete flatwork, traffic control, demolition and grading, storm drain installation, and horizontal drilling/bore and jack, BES project manager Ronda Fast stated in an email. Granite Construction, the prime construction manager/general contractor, is currently soliciting bids for subcontractors for certain scope packages through Wednesday, January 17.

鈥淭his is in anticipation of future development of the Broadway Corridor project, although it will also help resolve some existing capacity and rehabilitation needs in the area,鈥� Fast stated.

The design team has completed 60 percent of the design, according to the project鈥檚 website. Team members are now focused on identifying connections to existing buildings, locating other underground utilities in the area to avoid potential conflicts during construction, and ensuring that pipe infrastructure meets anticipated capacity needs.

BES expects the construction contract value to be between $4.7 million and $5.7 million.

Construction is expected to begin this spring and take about one year to complete.
