PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: Work to reimagine Errol Heights Park, in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood, is now substantially complete. Construction crews restored natural habitat, established wildlife viewing spots, improved trails and constructed paths for better accessibility, and installed new picnic areas and play features.

The design focused on ensuring accessibility for people of all abilities. New park amenities include a playground with natural play features; a Portland Loo (restroom); a splash pad for water play; a skate spot (smaller skateboard area); an ADA-accessible elevated boardwalk and connection; a half-court basketball area; nursery landscape beds; a lawn area; wetland viewpoints and a science education platform; ADA-accessible trails; a public art sculpture; more than 450 planted trees, including native ones; and 11 picnic tables, including five ADA-accessible ones.

The elevated boardwalk enables all visitors to climb a hill that connects the park鈥檚 upper and lower sections. This was identified as an essential feature during the project鈥檚 community engagement process. The elevated walkway weighs more than 35.5 tons and spans 337 feet.

The artist team of Terresa White and Mike Suri was selected to create a public sculpture that celebrates the park鈥檚 landscape and ecology. The sculpture includes tall, slender, steel forms with cup-like organic shapes that echo the park鈥檚 trees, collecting and draining rainwater. The sculpture鈥檚 bronze elements include three human faces as well as some of the plants and animals found in the park.

In August 2018, funding for the Errol Heights Park project was increased from $5.3 million to $12 million, allowing for full park development and natural area restoration. The funding came from system development charges.
