Crews have broken ground in Redmond on a new cancer treatment center for St. Charles Health System.

TVA Architects designed the two-story, 53,000-square-foot building. The project team also includes civil engineer DOWL, structural engineer KPFF, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer PAE, landscape architect SZABO Landscape Architecture, and general contractor Skanska.

The building will be slightly south of St. Charles Health System鈥檚 main hospital in Redmond, at 180 N.W. Kingwood Ave.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a much-needed resource for the Redmond area,鈥� said Mandy Butler, TVA Architects鈥� principal in charge of the project. 鈥淪t. Charles is using bond dollars that the community entrusted them with to expand service.鈥�

St. Charles Health System is paying for the project with $90 million secured through bonds for new construction.

Currently, more than 40 percent of patients treated at the St. Charles Cancer Center in Bend travel from Redmond, Madras, Prineville and other rural communities. If they need radiation as part of their treatment, this can mean traveling more than 50 miles for services multiple days in a row for weeks at a time. Such commutes will be alleviated with the arrival of the new Redmond facility, which will serve up to 300 patients per day, according to St. Charles Health System.

鈥淭his cancer center is a positive development not just for cancer patients and their families, but for Redmond overall,鈥� St. Charles Health System board member Jon Bullock stated in an email. 鈥淲e have the chance to be a special place in the world, where families can get the compassionate care they need at the most difficult time of their life. Our community can be there to take care of them. This could be a catalyst to positively impact the culture of Redmond forever.鈥�

The center will include clinical space for radiation oncology, surgical oncology, medical oncology and integrative therapies. It will also house infusion services, an outpatient draw lab with integral testing, and a compounding pharmacy, as well as support spaces for offices, conferences and patient education.

鈥淲e鈥檙e doing a combination of cross-laminated timber and conventional steel construction,鈥� Butler said of the building鈥檚 materials.

The entry atrium lobby will be constructed with cross-laminated timber. The space will have skylights and lighting at both ends to provide easy wayfinding, Butler said. There will be a registration desk, stairs and elevators.

The exam rooms will be in the building鈥檚 north block. Diagnostic services and support space will be in the south block.

The second floor will include the infusion unit, where most cancer patients will spend their time, Butler said. This area will face west to provide patients in the 24 infusion chairs with expansive views of the Cascade Mountains.

The infusion room will also hold a TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, which uses photon or electron beams to target and treat cancerous tumors through external beam radiation, according to St. Charles Health System.

The center will offer brachytherapy, which delivers localized cancer treatments through internal radiation. The building will also have a lab and space for numerous support services.

鈥淥ther support spaces, like the infusion pharmacy, those things will happen on the east side of the building,鈥� Butler said.

She said the team has put a lot of design into the atrium space with a variety of seating options to make people feel comfortable regardless of their mobility. The space will also have plants and lots of natural light.

The total project cost is $44.8 million.

Construction is estimated to be finished by the end of 2025. The building is scheduled to open by January 2026.
