The Portland-based International Living Future Institute will receive an approximately $4.7 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The selections of 38 recipients of grants totaling nearly $160 million were announced by the EPA on Thursday. The money will support efforts to reduce climate pollution caused by the manufacture of construction materials and products.

Construction materials used in buildings and other infrastructure account for more than 15 percent of annual greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, according to EPA estimates. Inflation Reduction Act funding will reduce climate pollution by helping businesses measure the carbon emissions associated with extracting, transporting and manufacturing their products, the EPA stated in a press release.

Building on the success of Declare and the Living Product Challenge, ILFI plans to聽develop and implement a new label for the building industry to assess the environmental performance of construction materials, and streamline specifications for more climate-friendly products, ILFI CEO Lindsay Baker stated in an email.聽ILFI will share more information about its plans in the coming months.

Other grant recipients set to invest in the Pacific Northwest include Pioneer Millworks (projects in Oregon and other states), the International Code Council (projects in Oregon and Washington), Heidelberg Materials (projects in Oregon, Washington and other states), and Oklahoma State University (projects in Oregon, Washington and other states).

Grantees are expected to receive their funding in late summer.
