Much of the campus, in Bend, was constructed nearly 70 years ago. But change is on the way.

Crews in late June began demolishing most campus buildings in preparation for new construction. The approximately $178 million project will be completed in three phases over four years.

The project team includes architect BBT Architects, civil engineer DOWL, structural engineer Walker Structural Engineering, landscape architect Cameron McCarthy, and general contractor Kirby Nagelhout Construction Company.

Plans call for keeping a few buildings, including the Robert D. Maxwell Center (completed in 2021), a production kitchen that serves the entire school district, and the technology center. New buildings were designed to preserve the campus鈥� rich history and unique culture, stated BBT Architects associate Bennett Sapin, one of the project鈥檚 lead architects.

New spaces will include administrative areas, a three-story classroom wing, athletic facilities, a commons area, a library, and fine arts classrooms, Bend-La Pine Schools Director of Communications Scott Maben stated in an email. Also, the production kitchen will be expanded.

鈥淭he modernized campus will preserve aspects of the original high school design by creating a single, connected building with integrated outdoor courtyard spaces,鈥� Sapin stated.

The building鈥檚 main east and west wings will be bridged by the commons and administrative areas. At the heart of the school, two new exterior courtyards will flank the commons space, providing outdoor connectivity, circulation, and ample student gathering space.

Site improvements will include new parking lots and drop-off areas at both the east and west ends, and a new bus drop-off area along Southeast Glenwood Drive to the south. A new pedestrian promenade will connect the east parking lot along Ninth Avenue to the new theater lobby at the site鈥檚 northwest corner. A special veterans memorial will be created in the courtyard south of the commons. It will be devoted to former Bend High students/graduates who were killed or missing in armed conflicts, Sapin stated.

Building exteriors will feature various types of brick cladding, with metal panel infill. Key building spaces 鈥� such as entrances, the commons and the library 鈥� will have large amounts of glass to ensure visibility and let natural light into the building.

鈥淭he interior is designed to be welcoming to students, with light, neutral colors; natural materials, like linoleum flooring and natural wood; and with school colors and branding that reinforce school community,鈥� Sapin stated.

Sustainability features will include LED lighting, natural ventilation via operable windows in regularly occupied spaces, and some solar panels on flat roofs.

Phase one is under way and includes demolition of I Hall, D Hall and most of C Hall, and removal of the baseball field. Starting in September, construction will begin constructing a three-story classroom wing (B Wing), the front entrance, the main office and counseling center, the commons and outdoor courtyards. This phase is set to wrap up in July 2026.

Current plans call for work on phase two to begin before phase 3, but with some overlap, Maben stated.

Phase two, scheduled to begin in June 2026, will include demolition of athletic facilities and then construction of two gymnasiums, athletic facilities and offices, a school-based health center, and a varsity baseball field at the Southeast 15th Street athletic complex.

Phase three, scheduled to start around June 2026 as well, will include demolition of a classroom wing (S Wing), a day care center and a student health clinic and then construction of spaces devoted to art, music and theater as well as a culinary program. Also, the production kitchen will be upgraded.

Phases two and three are expected to finish by July 2028.

In November 2022, voters approved $249.7 million in General Obligation bonds to improve safety and modernize aging schools in the Bend-La Pine district. Approximately 59 percent of that amount is allocated for the modernization of Bend Senior High School.
