Construction of a 14-story tower is proceeding at Oregon Health & Science University鈥檚 Marquam Hill campus in Southwest Portland. It’s part of the OHSU Hospital Expansion Project.

The 513,000-square-foot Inpatient Addition (IPA) is rising on the former OHSU School of Dentistry site, at 579 S.W. Campus Drive. It will connect to the main hospital and to Kohler Pavilion via three sky-bridges, including one linking to the hospital on two levels.

The project team includes architect NBBJ, civil engineer KPFF, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer Stantec, landscape architect Mayer/Reed and general contractor Skanska.

The IPA’s primary services will be surgical oncology and cellular therapy; the building will open with 128 beds but enough space to hold up to 64 more. Four of the 14 floors will be only building shell initially; the additional beds are envisioned for those floors at a time still to be determined, OHSU spokesperson Erik Robinson stated in an email.

鈥淭he outstretched forms of the patient floors serve as an iconic entry landmark, and afford patients and staff panoramic views of Mt. Hood,鈥� NBBJ partner Jose Sama stated in an email.

The exterior will primarily feature glass vision panels and white spandrel glass, according to Sama. The glass reflects the surrounding Marquam Hill landscape and the ever-changing daylight conditions, he stated.

鈥淚n the spirit of continuing the campus鈥� connection with nature, an elevated roof garden is nestled between the patient wings to enhance the views for patient rooms,鈥� Sama stated.

At the base of the building, a pedestrian path will curve through a multi-sensory garden and connect to the adjacent Elks Children鈥檚 Eye Clinic.

The total project cost of the IPA is $650 million. An approximately $8.3 million building permit was issued in late October for construction of a new multimodal hub to serve the IPA. Construction of that portion is due to start in March 2025 and wrap up that December.

鈥淭he hub will have space for two buses to stop at the same time and initially will have space for about 90 bikes, including large and electric, with the ability to expand with stacked racks,鈥� Robinson stated.

Next year, OHSU鈥檚 board of directors will consider authorizing the expansion of the Doernbecher Children鈥檚 Hospital. OHSU鈥檚 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) would gain 18 beds and space dedicated for patients with high-risk pregnancies would gain 11 adult beds.

Another project calls for adding space for brain care and heart care in Kohler Pavilion. Hospital service lines will expand as some units shift from Kohler into the Inpatient Addition. Those shifts will coincide with the planned opening of the IPA in April 2026, Robinson stated.

The approved funding for the IPA project includes $300 million in budgeted capital spending and $350 million in financing.

Construction began in January 2022 after the board of directors approved the project in October 2021.
