Clark College, in Vancouver, Washington, is expanding its reach. And the first building at the new Boschma Farms campus about 15 miles north in Ridgefield is now open.

Construction of the 49,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center, at 7000 E. Pioneer St., began in June 2023 and wrapped up recently. Classes will be offered at the facility beginning in spring 2025.

Hennebery Eddy Architects designed the project, and Mortenson delivered it via the progressive design-build method. The team also included civil engineer MacKay Sposito, structural engineer Equilibrium Engineers LLC, and landscape architect Lango Hansen. The total project cost, including equipment, was $62 million.

Clark College will begin moving into the Advanced Manufacturing Center over the next few months and prepare to begin offering classes next year. By fall 2025, the center will become the hub for the college鈥檚 advanced manufacturing program, which is currently in development. When fully formed, the program will accommodate an initial enrollment of 32 students in two cohorts of 16 apiece, though the college plans to eventually serve 48 students across three cohorts.

The center was designed for flexibility as the college anticipates future growth in north Clark County communities, according to a press release.

Located on a 10-acre property due east of the Ridgefield Junction, the center features collaboration zones, satellite instructional facilities, classrooms, laboratories, offices and more.聽Approximately 35,000 square feet is dedicated to manufacturing training with three industry-specific classrooms, four labs, five manufacturing cells and an open manufacturing floor. The remaining 14,000 square feet is devoted to five general education classrooms as well as amenities for faculty and students.

Manufacturing and classroom spaces in the Advanced Manufacturing Center are designed for multiple education delivery modes, including lectures, collaborations, project-based learning, and hybrid models featuring online content and classroom application. The facility鈥檚 acoustic design ensures that unamplified voice communication will carry above ambient machine noise.

Use of the progressive design-build construction delivery method was spearheaded by Mortenson in collaboration with Hennebery Eddy Architects. This method was instrumental in the implementation of prefabrication, according to the project team.

The team is seeking a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver rating for the facility.
