Even after 23 years in business, the leaders of ABD Engineering & Design acknowledge that sustaining confidence is difficult amid feelings of imposter syndrome. 鈥淔acing many unfamiliar and complex scenarios frequently made us question our qualifications,鈥� they say.

Yet the 100 percent women-owned acoustical consulting and audiovisual design firm with offices in Portland and Grand Rapids, Michigan, is showing its value to project teams. In fact, ABD was invited to a design team by a local firm and a national firm working in partnership.

鈥淓ach firm independently brought us to the table as a preferred acoustical and audiovisual consultant, without the other鈥檚 knowledge,鈥� according to the firm.

With Melinda Miller as president of the 12-employee business, ABD has sought ways to support women. All forms of communication are reviewed, job postings and interview processes are inclusive and gender-neutral, and workplace practices and policies are assessed to promote an appropriate work-life balance.
