Kristine Kennedy says her first thought each day is about how to achieve success 鈥� and she defines that by the number of people she can serve and how she can do so better. That approach has served her well as president of Portland-based Highway Specialized Transport, which focuses on equipment transport, heavy hauling, and specialized transportation services.

Kennedy says she aims to be an empathetic leader.

鈥淭eaching people to 鈥榳alk in the shoes鈥� of others is one of the hardest things I have ever done and so I can only assume that it is hard for others,鈥� she says. 鈥淚f we can teach each other that everyone has a different point of view and to try and understand, then we are truly supporting each other.鈥�

Around a year ago, when a competitor closed its doors, Kennedy hired its remaining employees and bought its equipment. Highway Specialized Transport has since grown by 30 percent.
