PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Gladstone Library was a collaborative project. The design was led by four female architects 鈥 two from Johnston Architects of Seattle and two from Opsis Architecture. An extensive community engagement process was led by JLA Public Involvement, ensuring stakeholders鈥 voices were central to the project and reflected in the final space.
Functionality is maximized in a compact footprint. The library includes study rooms, a versatile meeting room accessible after hours (a direct response to community requests), an interior courtyard that balances privacy with visibility, a children鈥檚 area with movable shelving, a dedicated teen space, a seed library, technology space, and makerspace.
Acoustic control measures, clear sightlines, and a mix of windows and clerestories flood the library with natural light. Designers prioritized accessibility and furnishings that serve people of all abilities.聽The library also features a perforated metal sunshade (inspired by a beloved local big-leaf maple tree) that reduces glare while maintaining outdoor views. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards guided the design, which incorporates passive solar heating, daylighting, and natural ventilation.
With the site on a prominent corner of Gladstone鈥檚 main street, the architects carefully considered the impact on the townscape, selecting external colorways and materials to blend with the surroundings and look attractive on both sunny and rainy days. Also, the team created a solid building base that references high rocks, a feature in Gladstone.
