Seattle-based KPFF has received a Grand Award from the national American Council of Engineering Companies for its work on the Portland International Airport terminal core redevelopment project. The honor came via ACEC鈥檚 58th annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition.

The centerpiece of the $2 billion PDX project is the 400,000-square-foot mass-timber roof, which was crafted from locally sourced wood. It鈥檚 supported by more than 30 Y-shaped columns equipped with seismic isolators. The design allows the structure to absorb and withstand seismic events, ensuring above-code safety while providing a warm, light-filled space for travelers. As the project鈥檚 structural engineer, KPFF provided seismic strategies that address the unique challenges presented by the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The uses of renewable materials, energy-efficient systems, and innovative building techniques reflect the airport鈥檚 dedication to environmental stewardship.

The PDX terminal core redevelopment project is one of only eight to receive a Grand Award from 194 submissions. The project, which previously won an ACEC Oregon Grand Award, is now eligible for more competition honors (including 鈥淕rand Conceptor鈥� 鈥� the program鈥檚 best in show award). Any additional recognition will be announced May 20 at an awards gala in Washington, D.C.

Judging was performed in February by a 32-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, media, and academia. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and generation of excitement for the engineering profession.
