In a year defined by influential leadership and transformative impact, Nate McCoy is being recognized with two honors that reflect his deep commitment to building bridges, breaking barriers and creating legacy.

On Dec. 10, McCoy will be celebrated as a Daily Journal of Commerce Icon Award recipient for his lasting contributions to Oregon鈥檚 built environment and business community. The following evening, he will be honored at the 2025 NAMC-Oregon Holiday Celebration with the Architect of Progress & Champion of Change Award, recognizing his decade of servant leadership and enduring influence on the region鈥檚 construction and small business ecosystem.

For more than a decade, McCoy has led the National Association of Minority Contractors鈥� Oregon chapter (NAMC-Oregon) as president and CEO, transforming it into one of the most influential voices for equity, access and inclusion in Oregon鈥檚 construction industry. Through his bold and visionary leadership, NAMC-Oregon has become a catalyst for systemic change by expanding opportunities, strengthening partnerships, and creating lasting pathways for small businesses owned by people of color to participate fully in public and private development across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

鈥淭hese honors are not just mine. They reflect the collective effort of our NAMC-Oregon board, team, partners and members,鈥� McCoy said. 鈥淭ogether, we鈥檙e building bridges, breaking barriers, and creating an economy where small businesses owned by people of color don鈥檛 just survive, they thrive.鈥�

In addition to leading NAMC-Oregon, McCoy serves as interim executive director of the Black Business Association of Oregon (BBAO), where he is guiding the organization鈥檚 relaunch through a bold strategic roadmap centered on prosperity and generational wealth for Black businesses, families and youth. This work complements NAMC-Oregon鈥檚 mission, aligning two powerful movements for economic empowerment and opportunity.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not just creating programs. We鈥檙e building systems that ensure equity becomes the standard, not the exception,鈥� McCoy said.

A Portland native and proud member of a legacy Black family, McCoy鈥檚 journey has shaped his commitment to equity and representation. Growing up in Northeast Portland, he was active in Self Enhancement Inc. and attended Parkrose High School before earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in architecture from the University of Oregon. For most of his time there, he was the only Black student in the program.

鈥淚 know what it feels like to be the only one in the room,鈥� McCoy reflected. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I鈥檓 committed to opening doors and building networks, so others don鈥檛 have to walk that path alone.鈥�

Before joining NAMC-Oregon, McCoy spent seven years in public service with the Portland Housing Bureau and Prosper Portland, managing housing and community development projects that deepened his understanding of how equitable access transforms lives and strengthens communities.

Today, he continues to serve on numerous boards and commissions, including the Architecture Foundation of Oregon, Portland Metro Chamber, the Salvation Army Moore Street Community Center and the Governor鈥檚 State Disparity Study Advisory Committee.

The Daily Journal of Commerce鈥檚 Phenoms & Icons Awards recognize visionaries shaping Oregon鈥檚 industries and communities. The NAMC-Oregon Architect of Progress & Champion of Change Award further honors McCoy鈥檚 leadership as a driving force for equitable growth and opportunity.

NAMC-Oregon will celebrate McCoy鈥檚 visionary leadership at the 2025 Holiday Celebration on聽 Dec. 11 at the Oregon Convention Center. The event will bring together key elected officials, community leaders, small businesses and industry partners for an evening of reflection, recognition and connection while honoring progress, partnership and purpose.
