City of Roses Disposal & Recycling (COR), a company focused on reducing landfill waste, has spent 30 years delivering sustainable solutions through recycling, repurposing and forward-thinking practices that serve its community. Founded by Al Simpson, COR emerged in an industry dominated by multinational corporations, where access to funding and opportunities was often limited for minority-owned firms.

COR is now led by CEO Alando Simpson, a second-generation Black leader who has continued to expand the company鈥檚 mission while maintaining its community-centered approach. The firm remains 100 percent minority-owned, with an 80-person workforce that includes individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and those formerly incarcerated.

Among its recent achievements, COR secured contracts with the David Douglas School District and the Southwest Portland public trash cans program. The company also celebrated recognition of Chief Operating Officer AJ Simpson, who received the Breaking Barriers Award from NAMC-Oregon for leadership and industry impact.

COR actively partners with minority- and women-owned businesses and remains focused on intentional growth, team expansion and steady improvement as it scales its operations and community impact.

Al Simpson, a Portland-metro native, didn鈥檛 see minority contractors during his childhood. He started COR while holding a day job.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important for me to leave a legacy for my children, grandchildren and one day great-grandchildren,鈥� he stated.
