Portland's skyline is full of buildings that would have to be demolished after a quake, and several of those buildings wouldn't even preserve human life through an event, experts say.

Haiti's failed buildings have drawn a lot of attention since the Jan. 12 earthquake that hit the country. But engineers also are concerned about the effects the earthquake has had on the country's fragile roads, power lines and communication systems.

An earthquake in Oregon would be "almost an exact replica" of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Chile in February, according an international structural engineer specializing in earthquakes. But since earthquakes happen so frequently in Chile and so seldom in Oregon, the damage in Oregon would be worse.
