Timberline Lodge was constructed between 1936 and 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression. Workers used large timbers and local stone, and placed intricately carved decorative elements throughout the building. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the lodge on Sept. 28, 1937, and the project was completed in February 1938. Today, Timberline Lodge is a popular tourist attraction with more than a million visitors annually. It is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

The Forest Service has issued an invitation to bid for the Timberline Lodge historic landmark entrance sign at the junction of Highway 26 and Oregon Route 173 (Timberline Highway).

The work will occur on Forest Service lands, but partially within Oregon Department of Transportation right-of-way. The contractor shall provide a traffic control plan to attach to the ODOT permit. The work site is high public profile and visibility, and work shall not impede access to Timberline Lodge.

The project consists of constructing a masonry-veneered concrete base and a timber-framed superstructure that houses a custom sign for Timberline Lodge. The structure also incorporates a photovoltaic (solar) panel for powering lights for the sign.

The estimate is between $100,000 and $250,000 for the project, which is expected to be completed within 90 calendar days.
