No more free bus rides in Fareless Square

TriMet‘s board of directors today voted to eliminate free bus rides in the heart of Portland, effective in January. The Fareless Square zone of free rides will only apply to MAX and Portland Streetcar.
Elderly and disabled bus riders will be able to apply for a pass that allows them to continue riding for free, after paying the cost to produce the pass, according to a TriMet news release.聽 Currently an adult one- or two-zone fare is two dollars.
With the opening of the MAX green line next month, and the rerouting of the yellow line to run along the transit mall, rail transportation will serve more stops, many along the same route as buses.聽 The board’s decision to charge a fare followed a public outreach process.
Fareless Square has been a famous feature of Portland for 34 years. It was introduced as part of an effort to improve air quality by getting people to drive less.
