The project consists of converting the current police station building (the Cotton Building) into a visitor plaza located at 607 Water St. in Port Townsend, Wash.

The Cotton Building is a historically significant structure contributing to the downtown Port Townsend Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to all other requirements, all work will be performed under the guidelines of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standard for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Rehabilitation work on the existing building includes asbestos and lead paint abatement, and demolition of the existing roof, roof structure, existing garage structure, foundation, and all interior partitions and finishes. Other work includes cleaning and restoration of historic stone, brick and trim, seismic strengthening of the building, new roof structure, restoration/replacement of historic wood windows, new forced-air heating/ventilation mechanical system, new electrical power, distribution, lighting and communications, new fire protection systems, and interior partitions and finishes.

A pre-bid meeting will take place at the Cotton Building, which is at the corner of Madison and Washington streets, on Aug. 20 at 1:30 p.m. Construction is scheduled to take place from October to July.
