The Howard Street Charter School was formed in 1997 by a group of concerned community members who wanted to keep a middle school presence in their local neighborhood.

The Howard Street Charter School is a small middle school serving 150 students in grades 6-8. The school, at 710 Howard St. S.E. in Salem, is open to all students who reside in the Salem-Keizer School District. Students are selected through an application process that includes a lottery for the limited number of spaces available.

The school district is requesting bids for the remodeling of an existing shop classroom into a music classroom. Work is scheduled to begin on or about Sept. 9, and be substantially completed by Nov. 10. Final completion is set for Nov. 20.

A mandatory pre-bid meeting is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. at the Construction Services Building E, 3630 State St. in Salem.
