The city of Milwaukie, at the junction of highways 99E and 224, was founded in 1848. The city is undergoing a downtown revival in which new apartments and retail spaces are being constructed and a riverfront park is being developed.

The city’s arts committee is sponsoring the design and construction of a landscape sculpture garden planned for the south lawn of City Hall, a prominent 3,050-square-foot site in downtown. The goal of the committee is to promote art and artists in Milwaukie.

The project consists of a request for proposals for the design or design-build of a landscaped sculpture garden. Work includes the installation of four to five permanent sculpture pedestals, a winding path, native and flowering plants, and accommodation for one to three benches. The sculptures will be sourced and paid for through a separate process.

The site is next to Jackson Street, which is scheduled to undergo a complete reconstruction in 2010 to accommodate new TriMet bus shelters, lighting, seating, landscaping, and storm-water improvements. The sculpture garden should be an amenity for pedestrians and transit patrons, and support the city’s ongoing revitalization efforts.

The city of Milwaukie received a $17,000 grant from the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Commission. Additionally, the project expects to receive approximately $4,000 from TriMet’s Jackson Street Improvement

Project construction budget. Although additional fundraising is under way, proposals should include a project budget of $21,000.

There will be a nonmandatory on-site walk-around today from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at 10722 S.E. Main St. in Milwaukie.
