The Biomass Boiler Building project originally went to bid Oct. 22, but all bids came in much higher than anticipated. The project is for a proposed wood waste-fueled biomass boiler system that would heat sections of Forks Middle School and a new addition in Forks, Wash.

Rognlin’s Inc. of Aberdeen, Wash., submitted the lowest bid, which was $600,000 to $700,000 more than the project estimate. Hock Construction (Port Angeles, Wash.) and Primo Construction, Inc. (Sequim, Wash.) also bid on the project. The high bids most likely were based on the project deadline of June 2010; however, that tight deadline has been removed.

The biomass boiler would use chipped wood waste as fuel. This is considered a pilot project for using biomass to heat rural schools. The 50-foot tower, which will include windows to give inside views of the boiler, also will serve as a teaching tool for the students and community. A $1 million grant approved by the state Legislature is covering some of the project’s cost.

A pre-bid conference will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Quillayute Valley School District Board Room, 390 South Forks Avenue in Forks, Wash. Final completion is scheduled for Sept. 6, 2010.
