Mattawa, a farming community that dates back to 1909, is 30 miles east of Yakima in Washington state. It overlooks the Columbia River and has acres of orchards and vineyards nearby. It is also home to one of the few libraries made of straw.

There was no substantial development of the town until 1955, when a development company purchased the site and adjoining lands, and drilled one well approximately 765 feet deep. When the water system was completed, lots were sold and the town was established. “Mattawa” is an Indian word meaning, “Where is it?” On June 3, 1958, Mattawa was officially incorporated and the Port of Mattawa was established.

Approximately 4,500 to 6,500 people inhabit the town during peak agricultural seasons. The population decreases by approximately 2,000 residents the remainder of each year.

This project consists of the construction of the new Well No. 4, new Well House No. 4, relocation of Well No. 1 pump, relocation of Well No. 1 pump motor, associated electrical equipment, piping, valves, cast-in-place concrete, finish carpentry, doors and windows, gypsum drywall, painting, fire extinguishers and other work.

Prospective bidders are required to attend the pre-bid conference, which will be conducted by the Public Works Manager at 1 p.m. on Jan. 25 at Mattawa Town Hall, 521 E. Government Road.

All project work will be subject to the higher of prevailing state or federal Davis-Bacon wage rates. A federal grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Washington State Community Block Grant Program is helping pay for the project. All bidders must be licensed contractors registered in the state of Washington.
