The Oregon Zoo recently received a commitment of bond money for a series of projects. The main water line pressure reducer, accompanying conditioned building and site work are part of the water and energy saving measure identified in the bond.

The main water line project represents a small portion of replacing the zoo’s aging infrastructure. The above-ground, pressure-reducing assembly and related structure will provide uncomplicated access to maintaining and monitoring the main city of Portland water feed to zoo facilities.

This project consists of a request for proposals from qualified architectural and engineering firms for designing and building a heated and insulated building, approximately 10 feet by 20 feet, on Oregon Zoo property north of the TriMet MAX light-rail station; coordinating new electrical service to the building; removing existing double check valve assembly and vault, and installing new DCV and pressure-reducing assembly and associated valves to the existing 10-inch water line; demolishing a driveway; and changing the grade to divert water when the new unit is flushed and tested.

The Oregon Zoo will provide geotechnical services under a separate contract.

The anticipated bid date for construction is October, and the project is expected to be substantially completed on or about Feb. 24, 2011.
