Oregon’s universities and clean-tech companies could benefit from a third round of funding offered by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced $100 million in Recovery Act funding will be awarded to groups working on advanced sustainable technologies. ARPA-E was formed in 2007 to fund research and development of advanced energy technologies.

The funding will be focused on three areas of technology:

• Development of cost-effective grid-scale energy storage devices
• Materials for use in photovoltaics, turbines and other sustainable technologies
• Energy efficient cooling technologies and air conditioners for buildings

ARPA-E’s first round of funding in early 2009 gave money to 37 projects, including a technology that mimics photosynthesis to split water into oxygen and hydrogen to be used for fuel. Nearly 500 concepts responded to a second round of funding announced in December 2009, which focused on new innovations in biofuels, carbon capture and batteries for electric vehicles.
