Energy upgrades save Dallas money

When the city of Dallas found it was spending nearly $250,000 a year on natural gas and electricity, a quarter of its budget, it started looking for a way to bring those costs down.

The city sought the help of the Energy Trust of Oregon, which helped retrofit the city’s Dallas Aquatic Center to cut the community center’s electric and natural gas bills in half, saving the city about $86,000 per year.

Installed by Abacus Resource Management and managed by the Energy Trust of Oregon, the project included new condensing boilers, variable speed pumping and airflow, a new building automation system and high-efficiency lights and pool pumps.

Gen-Con Inc. also installed a solar pool heating system to heat the facility’s 195,000-gallon lap pool. Eighty rooftop collectors heat the pool during daylight hours.

The upgrades cost $681,729, and Energy Trust provided the city with $173,508 in cash incentives for the project.
