Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects has landed a $61 million contract to design the new Department of Homeland Security headquarters facility in Washington, D.C.

Architects from the firm’s Portland and New York City offices will help design the multimillion-square-foot project, according to Amy Columbo, public relations director at ZGF‘s Portland office.

The project, awarded by the General Services Administration, includes 2.1 million square feet of office space.

ZGF managing partner Bob Packard said the firm has not determined yet who in the Portland office will work on the project, which will be built at St. Elizabeths, a national historic landmark and a former mental health hospital previously used by the U.S. Department of Health.

ZGF will design four new office buildings, an addition to the historic hospital, three parking structures, a mail-sorting facility, a cafeteria and a child-care center. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold standard will be followed.
