Portland’s Bureau of Planning & Sustainability is receiving $34,000 to manage the city’s historic preservation efforts.

The bureau said in its grant application that 44 percent of East Portland’s properties are more than 50 years old, but the area lacks an inventory of potential historic buildings.  Portland has not updated its historic building inventory since the 1980s and is trying to fund an online database scheduled to launch in the next few months.

Half of the funds comes from a State Historic Preservation Office grant, and the other half is a match by the city of Portland.

The city will use $12,000 of the funds to survey several hundred properties in East Portland for the city’s historic inventory and for future planning. An independent contractor will be selected to do the surveying. The bureau expects to issue a bid this month.

The remaining funds will support planning and administrative staff activities, such as grant applications, an evaluation of the East Portland survey, education and outreach activities by the Historic Landmarks Commission and additional planning work to support historic preservation related to , an ongoing effort to improve the city during the next 25 years.
