A project to construct a correctional facility for the Puyallup Tribe of Indians is in the design phase. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money is going toward the project, which will be built on trust land adjacent to the tribe’s governance campus, on the reservation in Washington state. The original jail was destroyed in 2001 due to a magnitude-7.1 earthquake; currently, law enforcement offices, a 10-bed detention area and courtrooms are in modular units.

The owner is designing a three-phase justice center. This RFQ seeks to identify a construction contractor for Phase I – a correctional facility of approximately 28,295 square feet. The building will be two stories, with a mezzanine in the detention area. A large, central space will function as an outdoor recreation area and be open-air.

Construction is planned to be Type III, steel frame with masonry walls, and will accommodate detention, administration and visitors’ areas, prisoner intake and processing, food preparation and storage, medical examination, laundry facilities, a multipurpose room, an indoor recreation area, and an outdoor recreation area.

The tribe will contract directly with the architectural firm and the general contractor. The design-assist approach will enable site construction to start during design development, and allow the project to be completed quicker.
