The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District began construction on the new, 83,000-square-foot Vancouver Community Library facility in August 2009 with completion expected in early 2011. This new facility will be part of the future “Library Square,” a private, multiuse development at the corner of East Evergreen Boulevard and C Street in downtown Vancouver, Wash.

The purpose of the request for proposals is to select a vendor to complete the design, fabrication and installation of a three-floor wayfinding component described as a large-scale art piece known as the “Knowledge Wall.” It will be installed on an architectural concrete wall in the main atrium of the new Vancouver Community Library.

The “Knowledge Wall” is intended to welcome and engage visitors as they enter the main atrium. Orientation information is organized into three categories: Locate, Browse and Meet. Each of these has an LCD screen (owner provided) that allows patrons to interact with dynamic information. Below each screen is a painted aluminum shelf and a painted aluminum brochure for library-printed announcements and brochures. As visitors make their way up the main stairway or sit near the open balconies, their views downward will reveal printed imagery, as well as concept work fixed perpendicular to the wall. From a distance, it’s a 40-foot-tall, dynamic art piece about the nature of information. Up close, it functions as a utilitarian welcome/orientation station.

The selection of the apparent successful vendor will occur by June 1, and it is anticipated that the contract will be signed by June 15.
