The city of Tigard‘s first project in its new urban renewal area will help to serve Washington County’s growing population of seniors.

Developed by Community Partners for Affordable Housing, The Knoll will be located at Southwest Hall Boulevard and Hunziker Road and will provide 48 units of affordable senior housing, as well as 12 units reserved for veterans.

“Every ten seconds, someone is turning 60,” said Sheila Greenlaw-Fink, executive director of Community Partners for Affordable Housing. “There’s a huge need for affordable housing for seniors in our area and across the country.”

Designed by Carleton Hart Architecture, the 48,000-square-foot project includes 10 ground level units that will be fully ADA accessible, as well as an elevator for the higher floors. Several sustainable design features, including a rainwater cistern for flushing toilets and a green roof-ready roof system, were also incorporated.

“There’s no money left in the budget to install the green roof, but it’s ready if that becomes available in the future,” Greenlaw-Fink said.

Contractor LMC Construction broke ground at the $10.8 million project this month and expects to complete the project by spring 2011.
